Where it all began in my studio journal

The first three in the series of The Goddess Patron Saints

This series is a passion project that will be created over time, Thus far the series number is 35 diverse Goddess Patron Saints. Three thus far have come into being.(Yes they are for sale)

In the early 2000’s I was blessed to fulfill a soul dream to travel for seven months about Mexico,it was a game changer on many levels that turned into living there for a time two years after that travel.

Mexico embraces Catholicism    throughout  their country ,  it was a learning experience. Fireworks were a given in the countrys celebrations not limited to 2-3 times per year that is experienced here in Canada but mostly weekly in Mexico celebrating their Patron Saints , I literally lost count on who was being celebrated as there are alot of Patron Saints within the Catholic religion.

I chose to keep this particular project to myself as i navigated not only the making but the feelings that went with the series. There is something powerful in keeping creative work to oneself and that I have done and will continue to do so until the next ones and so on come into being.

The Goddesses Gathered

A body of work takes time before,during and after, this one came to me in remberance of a very memorable time of a dream come true, Mexico was a place and culture that had been carried deep within me from childhood until it had been realized by travel in the early 2000’s for seven months and then two years after travel living in the country of Mexico. The vibrancy,colours,language celebrations,religion,food and the people was full on filling me with joy that still happens to this day although I have not lived there full time for many years.

Patron Saints has always left me curious especially when living in Mexico, which is a devout Catholic country. I learned about death in a way that was celebratory ,loving and embracing of the afterlife, The way it was interwoven throughout the culture and country was thought provoking.

The variety of works I”ve created throughout the years explores themes of women,politics,spirituality,societal issues and magic. The materials that are used in my creative works is thrifted,found and donated via creative reuse stores,estate and auction spaces,nature,thrift stores and donations from friends and family.

Presently the work is being created with no commitment of showing the work in a gallery space at this time.As an assemblage artist I collect many bits and pieces for my work, my approach is use what I have from my creative stash.

It’s important for me to challenge myself with using what i have that often pushes the vision of the work employing alot of flexibility and pivot when needed. Empowerment ,visibility, openness,  spirituality, rituals, routine and  black women embrace the individual stories of each Goddess Patron Saint.

Well dear readers that is a wrap,  the first three have shown up ,the beginning of a journey of this new soul work for me, I shall return down the road with new pieces,I have no deadlines so new goddess patron saints will pop up when they do…..stay tuned. Be Well
